Isolation 10 (Day 40) [featuring Bill Direen]

from Isolation, Volume 2 by Clarinette

about

Back in 2012, I worked with legendary New Zealand writer, songwriter/musician and all around artist Bill Direen on a brief round of gigs and a radio sessions in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the midst of our wanderings Bill suggested that we do a spoken word (him) and music (me) collaboration. Within months, one of my closest friends passed away suddenly and I spent the following years processing that, getting my late friends music back into print and recording my "The Now Of Then" LP (largely centered around that event and my 30 year friendship with the friend I lost).

In the midst of doing this project, there has been no shortage of despair, I think that's the case for most of us. Working with recordings Bill sent me, I created a slightly more explicit, though I suppose still predictably opaque, statement about that despair. Please make of it what you will. Thanks to Chris Knox for introducing me to the music of Bill Direen and The Builders/Bilders/Bildirine/etc. And thank you so much Bill!

More will come as a proper Direen/Clarinette project.

One of those tapes made it to Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore who asked to release an LP. Tapes from those early years along with newly recorded material were released in 2002 as Haze. Clarinette has been an active recording project since. ... more
